Sri Lanka also proved its mettle at the ICC Cricket World Cup by winning the World Cup in 1996. Today, the country boasts 6 international cricket stadiums that can host day-night matches as well as day matches. The infrastructure is of international standard.

Cricket is the heart of Sri Lankan school sport as well. The tradition of inter-school cricket dates back to the historic Royal–Thomian encounter, first played in 1879. Today, famous venues such as the SSC Ground, P. Sara Oval, Asgiriya Stadium and R. Premadasa Stadium provide an inspiring setting for coaching and friendly fixtures. Sri Lanka’s global cricket legacy includes legends such as Muttiah Muralitharan, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Chamari Athapaththu.

Basketball was introduced in 1917 and quickly became established in the country, with women’s basketball developing from the 1960s. Basketball has a strong presence in Sri Lankan schools and clubs, particularly in Colombo and the Eastern Province, providing excellent opportunities for boys’ and girls’ touring teams to compete against local opposition.

Netball, especially popular among girls’ schools, has a history dating to 1921, when the first recorded game was played at Kandy High School. Its strong school tradition makes Sri Lanka an excellent destination for women’s and girls’ netball tours. Touring teams can enjoy competitive matches while experiencing Sri Lanka’s distinctive sporting culture.

Hockey has deep roots in Kandy, dating to the early 20th century, and remains an important school/club sport for both boys and girls. Historic grounds include Bogambara and Pallekele, offering touring teams opportunities to experience a sport with a rich local heritage.
